Decision-making skills are one of the most vital and in-demand skills that every recruiter or hiring manager is looking for in any candidate. Be it any organization, success depends on decisions that are being made based on past numbers, future forecasting, and long-sightedness strategies. An effective decision-maker has high emotional intelligence along with top-notch problem-solving skills.

The decision-making process executed by an effective decision-maker is not always based on decision-making models. An autocratic leader will look for a similar pattern during the rise of an emergency and implement a prescribed strategy but real inspirations are those who can innovate a strategy and make the best decision for further growth and prospect.


What kind of leadership does the educational department need?

Educational leadership needs those inspirational decision-makers who can identify the decision’s value and put that into effect. Decision-making in the education department is definitely very significant because any wrong decision can cost the entire career of every member associated with that institution. A magnificent trait of an excellent decision-maker is that she/he can weigh the pros and cons of every upcoming decision and thereby, decide the course of action.

You can be a part of the school’s leadership or administration board and can contribute a lot toward the welfare of the school. An educational leader must consider these 5 factors before making a decision:

SOS:

We have heard this abbreviation multiple times that indicates something has come up that needs urgent attention. This Morse Code, SOS stands for Save Our Ship was coined by sailors in need of help. During such moments when time-constraint is a factor, a leader must make her/his own decision without consulting others.

Democratic leadership, especially collaborative decisions, requires more time investment than a decision made alone. If important decisions are at stake, the leader must schedule more time for involvement.

More participation:

Depending upon the crisis of any situation, a school leader must decide if the involvement of other members while making a decision is important or not. For example, during the pandemic, it was not the lone decision of school principals to switch to e-learning mode. All the members of the board like teachers, finance, operations, etc., were a part of that decision-making process and that helped a lot in gathering information.

Inputs from each of these departments basically helped educational leaders to make the decision.

Expertise matters:

Members whose level of expertise is low, accept the decisions of leaders. Staff members who have higher levels of expertise insist for active collaboration or participation to draw the conclusion of any process. A school leader who desires collaboration will have to raise levels of expertise to successfully involve other team members for a group decision.

Decisions that are quite superior:

There are certain decisions whose significance is beyond evaluation. This is usually the case for instruction and learning, whether directly or indirectly. Situations that demand high-quality decisions, use the collaboration method as the apt decision-making model. If the decision is relatively unimportant, then the leader should simply make the decision alone.

Need or buy-in?

Many decisions in schools need staff support for successful implementation and results. A collaborative model often increases buy-in and support.

These are the certain factors that every school leadership must be aware of so as to make the best decision according to the demand. A certificate in school management and leadership is an in-depth learning process where professional teachers will learn more about how to be a good decision-maker. Having perfect decision-making skills is a superb quality but the level and limit of execution must be known to those who are aspiring to be educational leaders.
